Hematite is a heavy, metallic silver-grey iron mineral, traditionally kept as one of the strongest grounding stones: for stability, focus, calm and protection. Its name comes from the Greek for blood, because it leaves a red streak when scratched. Keep it dry, as water can make it rust. Note that most magnetic "hematite" bracelets are man-made.

Let's start simple

What is hematite?

Hematite is iron oxide and one of the main iron ores. Polished, it looks like dark, shiny metal and feels surprisingly heavy. Scratched on unglazed porcelain, it leaves a reddish-brown streak, which is why it was named from the Greek haima, meaning blood. Ground hematite was used as red ochre paint in cave art.

Its weight and iron content made it a symbol of steadiness and strength.

"Hematite is the anchor: heavy in the hand, steady in the mind."

Hematite myths, cleared up

Myth: "Magnetic hematite is natural."

Natural hematite is barely magnetic. Strongly magnetic beads are usually a man-made material sometimes called hematine.

Myth: "Magnetic bracelets cure pain."

There is no good evidence for this. Wear hematite for its traditional meaning, not as treatment.

Myth: "You can cleanse it in water."

Water can make it rust. Use smoke, moonlight or earth.

Myth: "A broken hematite absorbed bad energy."

It is fairly brittle and can crack if dropped. That is physics, not a sign.

Signs to look for

How will you know it's working?

People who keep hematite often describe feeling steadier and more present, and finding it easier to focus on one task.

"Hematite reminds you to put both feet on the ground."
