Let's start simple

What is emerald?

Emerald is beryl, the same mineral as aquamarine, coloured green by traces of chromium or vanadium. Almost every emerald has natural inclusions, which jewellers lovingly call its jardin, French for garden. Most emeralds are treated with oil or resin to improve clarity, a long-accepted practice. Colombia, Zambia and Brazil are major sources.

Jaipur has been one of the world's leading emerald-cutting centres for centuries. Clear emeralds are cut for rings and astrology, while opaque rough emerald is carved into Ganeshas and figures.

"Every emerald carries a garden inside it."

Care

How do you cleanse and care for emerald?

Emerald is hard but brittle, and most are oiled. Avoid knocks, heat, hot water, steam and ultrasonic cleaners.

  1. Lukewarm water and a soft cloth

    Wipe gently; no soaking.

  2. Gangajal or raw milk

In tradition, astrological emeralds are dipped briefly before first wearing.

  3. Dhoop or incense smoke

    30–60 seconds in the smoke.

  4. Store it alone

In a soft pouch so it isn't chipped by other jewellery.

  5. Set your intention

Traditionally the Budh mantra is chanted when first wearing it, as your astrologer advises.

For your home & office

Where to keep emerald as per vastu

These are the placements most often recommended in popular vastu practice:

  • North, Mercury's direction. For business, study and opportunity.
  • East, the zone of growth. Green stones are linked with growth and health.
  • Puja room. Emerald Ganeshas and idols.
  • Study table. For students.
  • Office or shop. For trade and negotiation.

💡 For astrology, wearing matters more than placement; ask your astrologer.

Emerald myths, cleared up

Myth: "A flawless emerald is the only real one."

Nearly all natural emeralds have inclusions. A perfectly clean, cheap "emerald" is more likely glass or lab-made.

Myth: "Oiled emerald is fake."

Oiling is a long-accepted treatment. It should be disclosed, and a lab report will say so.

Myth: "Everyone can wear panna."

In Vedic astrology it is suggested for certain charts. Ask an astrologer first.

Myth: "Emerald carvings are the same as gem emerald."

Both are genuine emerald, but carvings use opaque rough, not the gem quality used in astrological rings.

Signs to look for

How will you know it's working?

People who wear panna on an astrologer's advice often describe sharper thinking, smoother communication and better results in study or business. Those who keep emerald Ganeshas speak of a calmer, more focused study or puja space.

"Emerald doesn't think for you. It reminds you how clearly you can."

Emerald: questions people ask

What is panna stone?

Panna is the Hindi name for emerald, the navratna gem of Mercury (Budh) in Vedic astrology.

Who should wear emerald?

In Vedic astrology, emerald is usually suggested when Mercury is weak or beneficial in a birth chart, often for Gemini and Virgo ascendants. Ask an astrologer first.

Which finger and metal is emerald worn in?

Traditionally on the little finger, set in gold, first worn on a Wednesday morning. Follow your astrologer's advice.

How can I tell if an emerald is real?

Natural emeralds almost always show inclusions. Buy gem-quality emerald with a lab certificate, which will also note any oil or resin treatment.

Wipe it with lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Avoid hot water, steam, soaking and ultrasonic cleaners, which can damage the stone or remove its oil.

Are emerald Ganesha idols real emerald?

Yes, they are carved from natural rough emerald, which is opaque. It is genuine emerald but not the clear gem quality used in astrological rings.
