Let's start simple

What is obsidian?

Obsidian forms when lava cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow, leaving a smooth natural glass. It breaks with curved, razor-sharp edges, which is why ancient peoples made blades and arrowheads from it, and the Aztecs polished it into mirrors.

Snowflake obsidian has white crystal patches; rainbow obsidian shows coloured bands in light; mahogany obsidian has red-brown swirls. All share obsidian's traditional role as a protective, grounding mirror.

"Obsidian is a mirror. It shows you what is there, so you can deal with it."
